There’s something about spending time relaxing on holiday which sees many of us returning home with a piece of art or craft that beautifully illuminates a space, provides a talking point and serves as a permanent reminder of the visit.
There are galleries, exhibition spaces and events to discover including centrally at Windsor Royal, Eton’s mile-long high street leading down to Eton College, and surrounding areas. Here are some of the most established.
15 Windsor Royal, Yards Shopping, Windsor
Craft Coop is a Community Interest Company social enterprise supporting a retail and gallery space for products handcrafted by local artists and craftspeople. The gallery to the rear of the shop highlights art and ceramics, with the artists often on site to chat about their inspiration.
The Piper Art Bar, 51 Peascod Street, Windsor
A free house which also incorporates an art gallery The Piper Art Bar opened in May 2018.
Windsor Royal, Yards Shopping, Windsor
A boutique gallery specialising in original works, limited editions, and sculpture from emerging and established contemporary artists, alongside rare, signed editions from 20th century masters including Picasso, Hockney and Warhol.
Unit 24, Windsor Royal Station
The gallery’s collection of original and limited edition art regularly hosts artist appearances and exhibitions.
No. 8 High Street, Windsor
Located in a stunning Georgian listed building on the way to The Long Walk, The Gallery at Ice's collection features some of the best views of Windsor including contemporary fine art, collectable original prints and photography.
27 High Street, Eton
Established over 120 years ago, this fine art gallery offers for sale a selection of original oils, watercolours and historical prints, as well as providing specialist framing services.
100 High Street, Eton
Fall in love with a new piece of beautiful contemporary or modern art. The gallery regularly hosts events and exhibitions.
Eton College
The Verey Gallery offers a changing programme of special exhibitions to showcase and interpret objects from across the College Collections, and also regularly features items on loan. Exhibition free, and open to the public on Sunday afternoons or by appointment, Monday – Friday, 10am – 4pm.
High Street, Cookham,
Located in the picturesque ‘village in heaven’ where Sir Stanley Spencer RA was born and painted for most of his life, the Stanley Spencer Gallery is a modern art museum, home to the world’s largest collection of Spencer paintings, drawings, and personal memorabilia.
79 Queens Walk, Nicholson Centre
Another retail outlet for the Community Interest Company social enterprise which supports products handcrafted by local artists and craftspeople, mostly from within a 15 mile radius.
5-7 High Street, Sunninghill
A small family business started 30 years ago with a collection of original artwork, hand embellished prints and limited edition prints, as well as creative picture framing.
Eton Information Centre, Eton
Art@67 is a pop-up art display of local artists' work, located in Eton Information Centre on Eton's pretty high street. Artworks change on a monthly basis.
59a St Leonards Road, Windsor
Established in 1978, the Picture Framing Workshop sells original artwork and prints as well as offering an on-site picture framing service.
Windsor and Eton En Plein Air is the town’s largest and most exciting art competition. It will take place on Saturday 20th July 2024 inside the grounds of Windsor Castle.
Started in 2012 as part of the HM Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee celebrations, this event has continued to grow in popularity, attracting hundreds of artists from all over the world.
On the day artists bring their canvases, painting materials and an easel. Their canvasses are stamped at the beginning of the day, the artist can then choose one of the 11 locations within Windsor Castle from which to create their piece of work. They then have just six hours to complete their piece of art.
Having completed their work, artists are invited to exhibit their piece as part of an open-air pop-up exhibition in Windsor Royal, Station Shopping, where the public will have the opportunity to see and buy the work.
11 September - 29 October 2024, The Savill Garden
Set within the 35 acres of colourful gardens, Art in the Garden, set within The Savill Garden, combines eye-catching sculpture with horticultural excellence. Encounter sculptures in varying styles, subject and materials; all inspired by the natural world. Suitable for focal points in gardens, conservatories and indoors, all the art is available to purchase.
Meet the artists and makers and follow the free Cookham and Maidenhead Arts Trail over the weekend of 14 and 15 September 2024. The trail’s venues are located within a 5-mile radius around Cookham and Maidenhead and at each venue you’ll see quality art and meet the people who have created it. Each venue is open from 10am to 5pm and refreshments and demonstrations are available at many venues on the trail.
November 2024 (tbc), Royal Windsor Racecourse
Find that original piece of art to complete your home or office when over 160 emerging and established contemporary artists and galleries come together. Meet, browse, talk and admire prints, photographs and sculpture, and showcase the best in contemporary art to new and established collectors. Take several hours to appreciate everything there is to see at Contemporary Art Fairs – Windsor.
The Windsor Artists Collective is a group of around productive and accomplished contemporary artists from Windsor and the surrounding area. Drop by one of their many local exhibitions to meet the artists and buy their work.
