To get the obvious out of the way, the last few months have been quite unlike any other. The usual frenzy of family life was replaced by home entertainment, home schooling, home… well, everything. Staying safe and alive and together was everything.
So it was with some trepidation that my husband and I, after the rules were relaxed, started to think about getting back out into the world. The children deserved a treat. We deserved the chance to have food cooked for us! It all felt incredibly luxurious. The criteria? Guaranteed fun for the children, close to home, and special enough to be memorable. And so we chose Legoland Windsor.
Legoland is just under an hour’s drive away, and the themed rooms, rides and shops made it an easy sell to the children. I was a little more cautious… would it be safe? What about the typical crowds? Would it feel like a treat or just an exercise in trying to have fun in a post-lockdown world?
I needn’t have worried. We watched the video on the Legoland website about their current service, loaded ourselves into the car and landed in the warm inviting arms of a weekend away. The customer care was excellent throughout. At the resort we enjoyed a pre-check in welcome phone call and the kindness of several staff, including a lady on reception who replenished our dwindling coffee supply (thank you). In the park the staff on rides still smiled and chatted and made the experience as normal as possible for the children. All whilst cleaning with a frequency I admired. And wearing masks, obviously.
We stayed from Friday until Sunday, on the first whole weekend of their reopening, in a Wizard room at the Castle Hotel. When we arrived there were unexpected treats - lego gifts as well as store credits - as an apology for the restricted services. A lovely gesture. Somehow I’d missed the blurb about the fun and games in the room itself; there was a PS4 console loaded with every Lego game imaginable which thrilled the older one, and an in-room treasure hunt which the younger one loved. Win-win!
Those crowds I feared? Sidestepped beautifully by the park now operating at just a third of normal capacity. It was glorious to relax into such a ‘normal’ getaway. Children playing, helpful staff, attractions almost all available. And with shorter queues than normal too.
I’ll be honest, I did feel a bit like we were stepping out into a bold new world. But Legoland stepped up and delivered. The staff and the standards of hygiene maintained meant we quickly felt at home and relaxed into the experience. And the family now have a wonderful, positive memory to mark the end of the strangest of times.
Knight room next, anyone?
