We invite you to join us for an exciting evening of music from the classical and contemporary genres conducted by our Patron, the composer Jonathan Willcocks.
We're delighted to be performing Jonathan's uplifting composition, O Joyful Soul, which was commissioned by Epsom Choral Society to celebrate a major anniversary and was first performed in 2018.
Mozart composed his sparkling Symphony No. 29 early in 1774, about the time he turned 18. He had just returned from a visit with his father to Vienna where he heard the latest works of Haydn and others and the experience seems to have inspired him to write a number of important new works. This piece represents the high point in his early symphonic writing.
Our finale, the Haydn's celebrated Nelson Mass, was composed in 1798, the same year as the premiere of his great oratorio, The Creation, and of Nelson's victory over the French at Abukir. Its English title probably arose from Lord Nelson and Lady Hamilton's later visit to the Esterhazy Court in September, 1880, where several of Haydn's works were performed including this mass.
