On 9 April 2021 it was announced by Buckingham Palace that HRH The Duke of Edinburgh had passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle. For more information please see the official website of the Royal Family.
Visit the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council site for answers to frequently asked questions for residents and visitors and businesses including information on temporary road and car park closures.
An Online Book of Condolence is now available on the Royal Family's website for those who wish to send a personal message of condolence. A selection of messages will be passed onto the Royal Family and may be held in the Royal Archives for posterity. We recommend you pay your respects from the safety of your own home.
The Royal Family have asked that people consider making a donation to a charity of their choice, or one of The Duke of Edinburgh's patronages instead of leaving floral tributes in memory of His Royal Highness.
The Duke supported many organisations within the Royal Borough – a full list of patronages can be found on the Royal Family website.
If you would like to make a donation to help communities within the Royal Borough, The Prince Philip Trust Fund supports a wide range of causes including local charities, organisations and schools. The Baby Bank, The DASH Charity and the Kevin Cruise Foundation have all previously received funding. You can donate to The Prince Philip Trust Fund online.
You will find an overview and details of the ceremonial on the Royal Family's website and you can watch the funeral procession and service for His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle on the Royal Family's YouTube channel, below.
Councillor John Story, Mayor of the Royal Borough, said: “We are honoured that the funeral of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will be taking place at Windsor Castle on Saturday 17 April.
“Although this will happen in private at St George’s Chapel, it will be televised meaning that those both locally and around the world will be able to be part of this historic event.
“We are reminding everyone to remember the current public health guidance around COVID-19 and request that people do not gather outside Windsor Castle, on the Long Walk or in Windsor town centre.
“We recommend that you pay your respects from the safety of your own home and avoid making non-essential journeys to Windsor.
“Anyone wanting to send a personal message of condolence can sign the online Book of Condolence on the Royal Family’s website at https://www.royal.uk/."
